Reviewing how to install the most customizable Linux desktop environment on the best Debian based distribution Pop!_OS. This will also work with any other Debian based system such as Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Elementary OS, Zorin, and more!
You could also use a distribution based on KDE such as Manjaro KDE, KDE NEON, Kubuntu, OpenSUSE, KaOS, Netrunner, Chakra, or Arch with KDE plasma.
Update and Upgrade Pop OS
sudo apt update sudo apt full-upgrade
Backup with Timeshift
Install KDE Plasma
sudo apt install kde-plasma-desktop
sudo apt install kde-standard
Optional: Install LightDM display manager (backup first)
sudo apt-get install lightdm
AFTER FURTHER RESEARCH I WOULD NOT RECOMMENDED REMOVING GNOME. Having both desktop environments installed is fine.
“Based on what I’ve found so far actually removing gnome (pop-desktop packages) could have a negative effect on updating the system. Also doing this to get the max system performance will result in the Pop! Shop to be removed. Having both installed on Pop!_OS seems to be the best move. If you’re looking for limited resource utilization I’d recommend going with a distribution built around the KDE Plasma environment. With this said running with both environments installed isn’t all the resources heavy.”
